Practice! We Talkin Bout Practice!
August 1, 2007
Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a Chargers training camp session. As big a Charger fan as I am, this was my first time actually attending their training camp. I had always been sceptical about the event, always thinking it would be boring, not much to see, etc… However, I must say I was pleasantly suprised and had a great time and it did well to get me very excited about the upcoming season.
For those out there who are debating whether they should spend an afternoon watching football players practice, I give you my top 4 observations from my time at Chargers training camp.
1) Football players are big
I do not think I have ever been so close to so many big men in my life. I have gone to many games, but never been on the field up close and personal with players like you are able to do at training camp. You really gain an appreciation for the size and speed and courage these guys possess when you see them up close with pads on and imagine them coliding with others their size all game long.
2) I don’t know much about football
I used to consider myself to be very knowledgeable about the game of football, but after attending a practice I realize I have much to learn.
I was standing a stone’s throw away from the defense as they practiced their red zone defense. I could hear the middle linebacker making his calls and everyone else doing the same. The play would be run and then the coaching begins.
Ted Cotrell is barking at someone for being out of position (he looked in position to me) and Ron Rivera is barking at someone for poor footwork (footwork looked great to me). These guys understand the game down to the minute details and it is amazing to watch them pick up on little mistakes on the spot, correct the player and run the play again.
Talk about inside the NFL, this is inside the NFL and it is facinating to watch.
3) Practices are VERY competitive
I have some understanding of this because I grew up playing very competitive soccer, but even that pales in comparison to the way these guys get after it.
I witnessed Philip Rivers get visibily frustrated when he missed a pass by inches in 7 on 7 drills.
I witnessed Bhawoh Jue completely de-cleat Kassim Osgood in the back of the endzone when he attempted to catch a touchdown pass in the same 7 on 7 drill. I had no idea they hit like that in practice.
Finally, I saw Roman Oben and Marquis Harris take their 1 on 1 pass rush drill too far. They ended up fighting on the ground and having to be restrained by teamates as all the other players looked on. These guys are battling for their jobs and they take their practices very seriously. It is fun to watch.
4) The Chargers will be very good this season
There is an air of confidence around this team. They know they are good, they know they blew an opportunity last year and they know they should win the Super Bowl this year. You can see it in the way they practice. Everyone seems genuinely happy to be a part of the team and everyone is working very hard to reach their goals this season.

Football is one sport where you have to “bring it” on every play whether a game or practice or you’ll get your head handed to you. Here on the East Coast, as well as down South…you have the heat and humidity to cut through also in the pre-season. That can lead to a great deal of “unhappiness” during practices and fists are flying as fast as water bottles are being refilled. A practice has its own feel regardless of location but the essence is the same as in any game that counts…hit or be hit!

I haven’t been to training camp yet this season but I tend to make it at least once a year. I went when it was in Carson and when it was in La Jolla. My personal favorite memories of training camps past include.
La Jolla-
in 2001 Johnathan Rizzo and I were walking away from the practice field when a couple of the kickers (Darren Bennet, Wade Richey) came walking past us. Rizzo ( not a very knowledgeable football fan), seeing the back of their jersey’s thought his first name was “Todd”. (I am still not sure why). He was like, “Todd, Todd, can we get your autograph?”
Totally embarrassing.
Carson-
I remember getting David Bostons autograph on a jersey I bought for my brothers birthday. His arms were HUGE! This was before it had come out that he was on steroids. I think Pablo still has that Jersey. He should wear it.
Mission Valley-
Carson and La Jolla are both much more fan-friendly environments. Chargers park gets way crowded. Nevertheless my wife and I went last year and were behind a fence in a far endzone of one of the practice fields when Drayton Florence picked off a ball and came running straight towards us. He was head directly towards Athena with the ball in his hand when he noticed she was with me so he veered off and gave the ball to a lady just three people away from us. It was really exciting, enough to make Athena willing to again this year.
training camp rocks! I can’t believe this was your first time Matt. Way to go.

dude what happened to my comment?

Sorry, got spammed, no idea why.
Yea I was sceptical of the whole thing but it was a pleasant suprise.
It also might have something to do with the fact the team has stunk most every year until the last few.
I did not want to go watch an impending 4-12 team practice.
However, now that they seem poised to be perrenial Super Bowl contenders I will make an effort to make 1 practice a year.

Stunk? Like I said I went to the 2001 teams training camp. Talk about stunk.
LT and Drew Brees were a couple of rookies back then. Doug Flutie was the starting QB. Mike Riley was the head coach.
I also remember seeing John Butler cruising around on a golf cart. talk about a big man. To date I think he is the biggest person I’ve ever seen.

On this point, Luis Castillo was the inspiration for my 1st observation.
He is 3 years younger than me and an absolute beast. His biceps and calves are AT LEAST double the size of my legs. no joke.

Doesn’t it suck to think that almost every guy out there is younger than you? it’s creepy getting old.

I am so going to take Judah and Miriam. Do people dress in their full Charger garb or would that be weird??
August 2, 2007 at 4:41 pm
Of course they do! You would be a fish out of water without Charger gear on!
They will be stoked and may even get some autographs!

Many memories flood back at the mention of Charger Trainig Camp at UCSD. The team sucked then and my favorite players were guys by the name of Vencie Glenn, Gill Byrd, and Junior Seau. Those were the days.

You HAVE to wear your Charger gear. And bring a sharpie and maybe a football or a helmet or whatever you got because you can’t escape there without getting an autograph. It’s so easy and they are so approachable.
In 06 I went to Spring Training in Arizona and that also was an awesome experience. It’s nice though to have it in your own back yard.

5Najeras,
If you do end up going, I would be interested to hear the mother\female review of the festivities.
Feel free to write your review here!

5n, you should know that there may be some profanities clearly audible from the players and coaches. This is an NFL camp not a church softball league. So if you bring your kids try and stay out of ear shot. Or make sure they know how to do ear muffs.

In other Charger related news,
Has anyone seen the new Nike commercial featuring LT and other Chargers?
A great commercial that really got me even more fired up for the season!
Here is a link to view it:

You almost energized enought to take the 4-hour drive up to San Antonio to see the Cowboys train in the Alamodome. But I think I’ll just go start cleaning the grill for the fajitas I’ll be grilling for game one.
Chargers look REALLY good this year.

oooooooooooo…
That gives me the chills.
I’ve seen the new uni’s modeled but never in action like that commercial shows. Very, very cool.
what do you think the bears think of being run all over in that commercial?
Speaking of things that get you pumped up for the season. My wife surprised me a couple of months ago with a new Rivers Jersey. It’s the white one, very cool. And then, yesterday for no reason that I can think of I got in the mail a new LT jersey. This one is the Navy Blue. It came from bank of America, with whom I have a chargers credit card, but I don’t have any idea why it came. I think it was the football gods blessing me for my faithful fanness.
“With thunder bolts and lighting they’ll light up the sky-aie-eyee.”

Matt,
Sorry it’s so late and I already told you what I thought of practice, but I will reiterate anyway. I think we picked a bad day to go, because it was so crowded there wasn’t any sitting or standing room. The kids were hot, hungry and bored. Judah was pretty much just mad that he couldn’t see LT. Anyway, it made me not want to attempt fan day at the Q, which is a shame because it probably would have been better.
Daniel,
“5n, you should know that there may be some profanities clearly audible from the players and coaches”
Would this be worse than the profanities they hear at home??
JK
We actually couldn’t hear anything. Couldn’t get close enough.
We all looked pretty tight in our matching Charger gear though.

So the pre-season is officially underway!
I would say the team looked ok in their debut (but looked extra tight in the new uniforms)
Obviously there will be a little rust to knock off and they definitely have some things to work on this week in practice.
I thought the 1st team offense looked good. They moved the ball well, just a few stupid penalties stalled the drives.
The defense gave up an opening touchdown, but almost had a pick on what I thought was a ticky-tack holding call.
Thank God for football season!
